John Lindfield, is a local person to Horsham, West Sussex, born and raised in the town. The Lindfield family tree from recent investigation, dates back to the 17th Century, to the village of Slaugham, West Sussex, less than 10 miles away. So we are not great travellers!
John has always had a deeply felt relationship with the countryside. Growing up as a child around the Denne Hill area of Horsham. Hence, to arrive at country related crafts was not by chance.
For many years now, he has been contracted out, by various local and county authorities. But it was when he realised, that so many traditional country crafts were being lost, when craftsmen died, and took their skills with them. Then, becoming an instructor became more than an issue, that he wanted to realise.
He trained originally as an Instructor, for the then Agricultural Training Board, (ATB), which has subsequently become known as LANTRA. From this solid base and background of experience, he runs courses, as well as his own business as a coppice worker.
John was one of the first instructors in West Sussex, to support the "Greenwood Trainees Scheme", a scheme for the trainees in the coppice industry, supported by Prince Charles.
During the spring of 2003, John was approached by Chichester College,Brinsbury campus, to assist with their garden for Chelsea Flower Show. John was asked to make some woven hurdles for the small courtyard garden, which was called "Transition". The judges were impressed with the overall garden and was awarded a silver gilt medal.
John is based at a nearby coppice, where he is found to be busy most days making from or cutting hazel rods. When he is not in his coppice, he often gives talks and presentations to interested groups and parties, about life and the seasons of a coppice worker. This is supported by slides and demonstrations of his work.
His main aim is to give back to other people some of his experience and skills learnt over the years, which he feels deeply about. If people leave having learnt a little from the courses and talks, but most of all have enjoyed the experience then this is a major aim achieved. To promote and educate a way of life that must not be lost in the future. |
